The Technological and Renewable Energies Institute (ITER), under the Cabildo de Tenerife, has decided to rename its Visitor Center as “Ricardo Melchior Navarro – ITER Visitor Center”, in recognition of the work of its first president and driving force.
The initiative, promoted by the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila Mamely, and the Councilor for Innovation, Research and Development, Juan José Martínez, aims to honor the memory of a figure whose vision was fundamental for the progress of the entity and for positioning Tenerife as a benchmark in the field of renewable energies.
“
"Ricardo Melchior was a key figure in understanding the technological and energy development of Tenerife in recent decades. His vision allowed the island to be at the forefront of renewable energies and innovation, and this recognition contributes to preserving his legacy for future generations."
The ITER Visitor Center, inaugurated in 2004 during Melchior's presidency, is an emblematic space dedicated to dissemination, training, and meetings. Annually, more than 7,000 people visit its facilities, which include exhibition areas, educational spaces, and an auditorium with capacity for nearly 200 people. This center promotes scientific culture and energy transition in the Canary Islands through activities aimed at educational centers, universities, and the general public.
“
"ITER is today a benchmark thanks to the initial impulse of Ricardo Melchior. Dedicating the Visitor Center, which is the Institute's gateway to the public, is a way of recognizing his role and linking his figure to the scientific and technological dissemination carried out from this space."
The decision to rename the center continues the institutional recognition granted to Ricardo Melchior on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of ITER, celebrated in 2025. This agreement ensures that his legacy remains permanently associated with one of the most important spaces for the Institute's outreach activities. Furthermore, the progressive update of the new name in signage, official documentation, and ITER's communication channels is planned.
