Through a statement released on social media, the head of the WHO directly addressed the island's citizens to allay concerns about the situation, reminding them that the current scenario “is not another COVID-19”.

The international body highlighted the operation designed by Spanish authorities to manage the vessel's arrival at the industrial port of Granadilla, in southern Tenerife. This protocol includes disembarkation of passengers away from residential areas and their transfer in sealed vehicles under strict health and police control for repatriation, ensuring no contact with the local population.

The WHO explained that the request to Spain to host the cruise ship is covered by the International Health Regulations, a binding framework that coordinates the global response to public health emergencies. These regulations stipulate that, in situations of health risk, the nearest port with adequate medical capacity and infrastructure must be identified, conditions that Tenerife met.

Hantavirus is a zoonotic disease primarily transmitted by rodents through the inhalation of contaminated particles. Although some variants can cause cardiopulmonary syndrome, human-to-human transmission is rare. The WHO stressed that international health protocols significantly reduce the risks of spread.

The WHO Director-General announced his intention to travel to Tenerife to oversee the operation and express gratitude for the collaboration of authorities and personnel involved, acknowledging the “solidarity, dignity, and compassion” demonstrated by the island in this complex situation.
