The construction of this new infrastructure, aimed at improving waste management on the island, has been affected by climatic setbacks that have interrupted progress. Official sources from the governing group of the Tenerife Island Council attribute the delay to the copious rains that occurred in recent months.
The facility, which will be located at the junction of Camino Barranco El Rodeo and Calle Alfredo Hernández Transversal Primera, near the Tenerife North Airport and the Insular Slaughterhouse of Tenerife, began its works in January with an investment of 1.1 million euros and an estimated execution period of eight months. However, subsequent progress has been minimal.
According to data provided by the island institution, after an initial phase of land clearing, the work had to be halted due to persistent rain episodes. Currently, foundations are being recalculated based on recent geotechnical studies to proceed with the construction.
This project is part of the Waste Area's initiative to expand the network of waste disposal facilities on the island, aiming to increase the collection and recycling of domestic waste. At the time, the Minister of Natural Environment, Blanca Pérez, and the Director of the Waste Area, Alejandro Molowny, emphasized the importance of these infrastructures for promoting the reuse of materials and strengthening selective collection services.
The Los Rodeos project is part of a broader island-wide plan that includes the creation of similar new infrastructures in other municipalities. With this new facility, the island will have an expanded network, adding to the operational waste disposal sites in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Jagua), Las Torres de Taco in La Laguna, Güímar, Adeje, Buenavista del Norte, La Guancha, La Orotava, and Arona, in addition to other ongoing projects.
