Although there is no specific pension called “homemaker's pension,” the Social Security system offers several avenues for this group, who perform essential work at home, to secure economic income. These options are designed for those who have not contributed enough or never did, and are applicable to thousands of women in Tenerife.
The main alternative is the non-contributory retirement pension, aimed at people over 65 years old who do not meet the minimum contribution requirements for an ordinary pension. Requirements include having reached the minimum age, legally residing in Spain for at least ten years (two of them consecutive before the application), and demonstrating a lack of sufficient income. In 2026, the income limit for a single person is 8,803.20 euros annually, with a maximum amount of 629 euros per month distributed over 14 payments.
Another crucial benefit is the widow's pension, whose right does not depend on the recipient's work history, but on the contributions made by their deceased spouse. Unlike non-contributory pensions, this benefit does not have an income limit for its granting and can be combined with other incomes. Its amount ranges between 52% and 70% of the spouse's regulatory base, with guaranteed minimums that can exceed 900 euros per month, especially for those over 65 years old or with family dependents.
For homemakers who did work for some years before dedicating themselves to the home, there is the possibility of accessing a contributory pension if they have contributed for at least 15 years, with two of those years within the 15 years prior to retirement. The minimum amounts in 2026 for these pensions start at 936 euros per month without a spouse, and can exceed 1,200 euros with family dependents, which significantly improves economic protection.
Finally, a lesser-known option is the Compulsory Old Age and Disability Insurance (SOVI) pension, primarily intended for elderly women who contributed before 1967. To access it, one must have contributed for at least 1,800 days under that old system and not be entitled to another contributory pension. In 2026, the amount of this benefit is around 599 euros per month.
