A vessel from Salvamento Marítimo (Maritime Rescue) has rescued and is escorting a cayuco, located approximately ten nautical miles south of the Canary Island, to the port of La Restinga, in El Hierro. This was reported to EFE news agency by sources from the state-owned society.
The Guardia Civil (Civil Guard) alerted the Salvamento Marítimo center in Tenerife after detecting the suspicious vessel via radar. The alert placed the possible cayuco about 10 miles south of La Restinga.
Following the communication, maritime controllers dispatched the Salvamar Diphda unit, which proceeded rapidly to the indicated position. At 14:15 Canary time, the rescue unit confirmed sighting the cayuco half a mile away and proceeded to escort them to port.
“"The count of the people on board the vessel will be done on land."
The same sources indicated that the final count of the cayuco's occupants will take place once the vessel reaches dry land at the port of La Restinga.
