Representatives from the Social Councils of the University of La Laguna (ULL) and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) attended the ceremony. The presence of these representatives underscores the commitment to strengthen institutional cooperation between the Social Councils of the public universities of the Canary Islands and the CES, enhancing university participation in the dialogue on the economic and social future of the Archipelago.
The event, presided over by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, gathered institutional representatives and key economic and social agents from the islands. Sergio Melián, who represents Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) within the CES, succeeds José Carlos Francisco as the head of this consultative body.
During his speech, the new president highlighted the intention to reinforce the CES's role as a space for dialogue and consensus. He pointed out key challenges for this new phase, including housing issues, productivity enhancement, and the economic diversification of the Canary Islands.
The Social Councils of the ULL and ULPGC maintain a close relationship with the economic and social environment of the Canary Islands, fostering interaction between public universities, institutions, and various societal agents. Collaboration with the Economic and Social Council contributes to generating spaces for shared reflection on the Archipelago's main challenges.
