A 61-year-old hunter sustained deep wounds to his arm after being attacked by a presa canario in the Valle Brosque area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when the six-year-old dog lunged at the man, following an initial attack on one of the hunting dogs accompanying the group. Due to the severity of the injuries and significant blood loss, a tourniquet had to be applied to the victim.
According to testimonies gathered by the Local Police, another hunter present used his shotgun to shoot the dog, successfully stopping the attack. The animal sustained an injury to its paw. The injured hunter was initially taken to a nearby health center and later transferred to the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital.
Officers later located the animal's owner, who failed to provide the mandatory license and insurance for such a breed. The presa canario, which was not wearing a muzzle or leash at the time of the incident, was taken to a veterinary center due to the gunshot wound. The local animal shelter in Valle Colino was also informed.
The Local Police confiscated the shotgun used in the incident, a Beretta 12-gauge repeating shotgun, and handed it over to the Local Police's Firearms Intervention service. Investigations are ongoing to fully clarify the circumstances of the shooting and determine any potential liability of the hunter.
