The event is anticipated to gather 10,000 athletes from over 100 nationalities, with an estimated 20,000 visitors expected to flock to the island. This competition aims to solidify Tenerife's position as a key destination within the international sports tourism circuit.
The organization, backed by the Cabildo of Tenerife through Turismo de Tenerife, has confirmed that registrations are nearly sold out. A significant tourism impact is projected, with approximately 90% of athletes coming from outside the island, including 60% international participants and 40% from mainland Spain.
“"The staging of this event represents a milestone for the island's strategy to position itself as a leading destination for international sports tourism. The competition is capable of mobilizing thousands of athletes and their companions, generating significant economic returns and extraordinary visibility."
Lope Afonso, Vice-president and Minister of Tourism for the Cabildo, highlighted the event as a "milestone" in positioning the island as a leader in sports tourism, promising substantial economic returns and visibility. Meanwhile, Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, noted that the island's selection was due to its air connectivity, top-tier infrastructure, and climate, all factors that attract major events.
HYROX, originating in Germany in 2017, features an eight-kilometer run combined with eight functional exercises. Its popularity stems from its accessibility to all ages and fitness levels, with no completion time limit, fueling its growth to over 100,000 participants per season in the Iberian market.
Álvaro del Busto, Marketing Manager for HYROX, explained that Tenerife was chosen for its "solid tourism infrastructure" and its appeal in encouraging participants to extend their holidays. The multinational company organizes over 150 races globally each season in indoor venues, with over a thousand competitors aged 60 and above participating.
