The Tegueste City Council has released a detailed guide on the correct use of traditional attire for the upcoming San Marcos Pilgrimage, scheduled for Sunday, April 26.

The San Marcos Pilgrimage in Tegueste is one of the most anticipated events in Tenerife, attracting thousands of people who enjoy local music and gastronomy. In the days leading up to the celebration, preparations are crucial, and among them, choosing the appropriate attire plays a central role.

"Dressing as a 'mago' or 'maga' is much more than an aesthetic choice: it is respect, identity, and culture."

With the aim of preserving the authenticity of these festivities, the guide seeks to ensure that all attendees are aware of the guidelines for wearing the traditional 'mago' or 'maga' costume, thereby contributing to the atmosphere of folklore, 'parrandas', and Canarian gastronomy.
Key recommendations include covering the head, either with a hat for men or with a hat and scarf (or just a scarf) for women. Traditional linen or cotton garments are advised, such as flared skirts, bodices, and aprons. Emphasis is also placed on the correct placement of sashes, vests, and accessories, as well as wearing aprons that cover at least to the knee.
Regarding footwear, traditional leather shoes or espadrilles are recommended, along with traditional fabric bags or 'talegas'. The guide highlights the need to respect the materials, colors, and combinations characteristic of Canarian attire.
Furthermore, the City Council has specified which garments and accessories should be avoided to maintain the essence of the pilgrimage. This includes modern clothing such as jeans, t-shirts, low-cut tops, or non-traditional garments, as well as modern accessories like watches, bracelets, or sunglasses. Sports footwear is also discouraged, aiming to encourage participation that honors the tradition and culture of the Canary Islands.
