The primary task for the 1,600 volunteers supporting the events of Pope Leo XIV in Tenerife will be to prevent minor incidents from becoming serious problems affecting the event's security, operations, or image. These collaborators will serve as the initial point of contact for the tens of thousands of faithful expected to attend the Eucharist scheduled for June 12th at the Port of Santa Cruz.
Among the fundamental guidelines for the large-scale event, emphasis is placed on maintaining calm in the face of any attendee discomfort or complaints, providing accurate information, and upholding a positive attitude at all times. National Police inspector, Pablo Cano, highlighted in one of the preparatory talks for volunteer coordinators the importance of projecting an image of order, given that the island will be under international scrutiny. The need to effectively manage bus flow, information QR codes, and the venue's capacity, limited to 35,000 seated individuals, was also stressed.
The importance of empathy towards disoriented attendees or those suffering from heatstroke was underscored, especially considering they will spend several hours in a venue without shade. Furthermore, a warning was issued regarding the phenomenon of imitation behavior and the risks posed by rumors, which can magnify insignificant issues. Inspector Cano insisted that, when in doubt, volunteers should consult a superior before providing erroneous data.
