The Cabildo de La Palma and the Los Llanos de Aridane City Council have inaugurated improvements to the drinking water network on Enrique Mederos Avenue, a crucial action to ensure supply in this urban area.

The “strategic” project was presented by Sergio Rodríguez, president of the Cabildo de La Palma and the Canarian La Palma World Biosphere Reserve Foundation, and Javier Llamas, mayor of Los Llanos de Aridane. The event was also attended by Alfonso Montes de Oca, executive director of the Foundation, and Josemaría Rivera, Councilor for Public Works, along with representatives from the contracting company.
This initiative was driven by the Canarian La Palma World Biosphere Reserve Foundation, utilizing funds from Royal Decree-Law 20/2021, dated October 5. This decree establishes urgent support measures for repairing damages caused by the volcanic eruption and for the economic and social reconstruction of the island of La Palma, within the framework of the public response to the volcanic emergency.

"These types of actions transform public investment into concrete improvements in people's lives, strengthening basic services and responding to real needs of the territory."

Sergio Rodríguez · President of the Cabildo de La Palma
From a technical perspective, the work involved installing a new distribution network using high-density polyethylene (HDPE DN-90) piping. This allows for individualized connections and significantly improves system pressure and efficiency. The intervention is part of the “Water Leak Detection and Repair” program, aiming to reduce losses and optimize a limited resource like water.

"Continuing to improve hydraulic infrastructure is fundamental to guaranteeing quality of life and stability in the municipality."

Javier Llamas · Mayor of Los Llanos de Aridane
The execution of the works was carried out by the La Palma-based company Fontanería Felipe Lorenzo, meeting the established deadlines. It is highlighted that approximately 70% of the tenders linked to these actions have been executed by companies from La Palma, which helps strengthen the local economic fabric and the island's response capacity. The completion of this project underscores the importance of inter-administrative cooperation between the Cabildo de La Palma, the Los Llanos de Aridane City Council, the Government of Spain through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and the Foundation as a technical tool.
