The initiative, aimed at boosting separate waste collection in the Canary Islands, will take place in Tazacorte, La Palma, and extend to twelve other locations across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, El Hierro, and La Gomera.
Environmental monitors will inform residents and visitors, answer questions about the yellow bin, and gather data on recycling habits. This action is part of a plan promoted by the Canary Islands Government's Department of Ecological Transition and Energy and Ecoembes, in collaboration with the Canary Federation of Municipalities (FECAM) and the island councils (cabildos).
The campaign was launched at Tazacorte beach, coinciding with its first activation day. Mariano H. Zapata, the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy, emphasized the importance of such actions for Canary Islands beaches to be "an example of good waste management."
Ángel Montañés, Director General of Environmental Quality, highlighted the determined efforts towards a circular economy through the 2024-2026 Action Plan and the crucial collaboration with Ecoembes.
Carlota Cruz, manager of Ecoembes in the Canary Islands, stated that citizen awareness is essential for progress in packaging recycling and that the campaign aims to improve understanding of what belongs in the yellow bin.
The campaign integrates beach awareness activities (175 sessions), special actions at local events like the San Miguel de Tazacorte festival, the Lanzarote Cycling Tour, and the Corralejo International Kite Festival, along with a radio campaign.
Monitors will conduct surveys to understand recycling habits and identify common errors, with participants eligible for prizes such as waterproof phone cases, portable fans, beach ashtrays, and a tablet raffle per island.
Ecoembes is an organization driving the transition to a circular economy, promoting reduction, reuse, and recycling for a waste-free future.
