The Punta Larga Cultural Space in Candelaria hosted the screening this Thursday, October 22nd, of the documentary Curanderas canarias. Tradiciones de sanación, directed by filmmaker Beatriz Chinea. The event is part of the ‘Ánimas y Rituales: la cultura de la muerte’ program, promoted by the local council.
Around twenty people attended the screening, which offered insight into traditional Canarian healing practices passed down through generations. Following the viewing, a Q&A session was held, moderated by José Gregorio González, with the participation of the documentary's director.
The 30-minute documentary features testimonies from twelve women – healers, herbalists, midwives, and 'santiguadoras' (those who heal through prayer) – who have kept these traditions alive through their knowledge. The work addresses ailments such as the evil eye, shingles, and indigestion, traditionally treated with prayers, medicinal plants, and various folk remedies.
This screening is part of the ‘Ánimas y Rituales: la cultura de la muerte’ initiative, which will run throughout October and November. The program includes cultural, educational, and artistic activities for all audiences, aiming to recover, preserve, and disseminate the municipality's intangible heritage, with a special focus on customs, beliefs, and rituals linked to All Souls' Day and the remembrance of those who have passed.
