The Candelaria City Council yesterday presented its 2027 municipal calendar, titled 'Daughters of Clay and Tradition', which pays tribute to rural women and the municipality's traditional pottery.

The municipality of Candelaria has launched its 2027 calendar, an initiative this year focusing on rural women and the area's ancestral traditional pottery, under the title 'Daughters of Clay and Tradition'. This edition, presented on the occasion of the International Day of Rural Women, brings back the focus on the land and the artisan hands that shape it, contrasting with the previous year's edition which looked towards the sea.
The legacy of pottery, an ancestral handmade ceramic whose pieces traveled to America in the 18th century, is today preserved by the Casa Las Miquelas Pottery Center, located in Santa Ana. At the presentation event, the Councilor for Rural Development and Fisheries, Maeva Tendero, and the Councilor responsible for the Pottery Center, Mónica Yanes, expressed their gratitude to the featured women for their participation and generosity in sharing their stories.
The calendar includes portraits by local photographer Sheila Torres. The cover features an image provided by Alicia O. Castro M. and Rosa F. García E, belonging to Cándida Tejera, the last potter of the Villa Mariana. Each month of the calendar is dedicated to one or more women who have been pillars of the municipality's rural and fishing life, highlighting their trades and origins.
Among the honored women are Salomé Marrero Jiménez, a farmer from Igueste; potters Belkys González Díaz and Verónica Hernández Trujillo from the Pottery Center; Juana Matilde Fariña Castro, a farmer and vendor; María Yolanda Puente Ramón, involved in the fishing sector; María Natividad Armas Cabrera, a farmer specializing in vegetables; Justa González Castro and Carmen Otazo Morales, farmers and vendors; Fidelina Sosa Rodríguez, a fisherwoman; Imangelia Pérez Torres and her daughter Ana Belén Navarro Pérez, bakers; Betty Higuera Álvarez and Chaxiraxi Triana Higuera, pioneers in the commercialization of Canarian wine; Obdulia Marrero Díaz, a farmer; Mary Esther Herrera Medina, from the agricultural center; and Angelina Betancor García, a goatherd.
Following the presentation, actress and comedian Delia Santana performed. Santana, known for her roles in productions like 'Panza de burro' and the series 'El ambulatorio', will return to Candelaria in November for the premiere of 'Supersaurio'.
