The Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria has launched a new operating room in its Gynecology and Obstetrics service, primarily for urgent C-sections, aiming to improve safety and speed of care for mothers and babies.

The recent addition of this surgical space within the Delivery Ward of the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria marks a significant enhancement in patient care. This operating room is specifically designed to prioritize and address C-sections requiring immediate intervention, thereby optimizing response times.
The investment for these works exceeded 650,000 euros, enabling the facilities to be adapted to the highest sterility standards. A comprehensive renovation of the electrical network, telecommunications systems, and air conditioning was carried out, along with the installation of specialized supplies, as reported by the hospital complex.
The primary benefit of this new infrastructure is that it eliminates the need to transfer patients requiring an urgent C-section to the general surgical area. This not only streamlines the procedure but also maintains optimal safety conditions for both the mother and the newborn. Urgent C-sections are those that occur during the intrapartum period, from the onset of labor until the expulsion of the placenta.
The hospital's Gynecology and Obstetrics service features seven delivery rooms and a multidisciplinary team of sixteen professionals. This staff includes specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology, midwives, nurses, anesthetists, auxiliary nursing care technicians (TCAE), orderlies, and cleaning personnel. Recently, the workforce has been strengthened with the addition of one TCAE, two nurses, and one orderly.
Since its inception in 1966, the service has undergone three relocations and transformations to adapt to the center's evolving needs and ensure innovation in patient care. Over this extensive period, its professionals have assisted more than 127,000 births. In 2025, the delivery rooms at Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria attended 2,407 births, including 49 multiple births, with an average maternal age of 33 years.
