The crime blotter in the Canary Islands has recorded an unusual incident that has left residents of the Valle de Güímar perplexed. It concerns the theft of a crucial vehicle: the only rescue SUV belonging to the local Civil Protection group. Most surprisingly, the car was stolen while inoperative due to a mechanical breakdown, forcing the thieves to use a crane to remove it.
The vehicle, clearly identified with 112 and Civil Protection markings, disappeared from its base on José Hernández Melque street, in the Tasagaya area. The disbelief grows when considering that the robbery occurred just a few meters from the Civil Guard post, without any alarm being raised during the operation.
We are still looking for it.
Civil Protection volunteers have expressed their despair after a week of fruitless searching. This SUV was not just a means of transport, but a mobile rescue unit equipped with vital emergency material, including TETRA communication equipment, advanced first-aid kits, and rescue stretchers for hard-to-reach areas.
The loss of this unique resource leaves the municipality of Güímar in an extremely vulnerable situation in the face of any disaster or accident requiring rapid intervention in difficult terrain. The group's officials have emphasized that this theft directly impacts the safety of all citizens.
The events occurred between April 4 and 13. The Local Police and Civil Guard are investigating the use of the crane, searching for traces of heavy-duty vehicles in security camera footage from the Tasagaya area. Public cooperation is requested to locate the vehicle or any clues about the TETRA material, which could be key to solving this "surreal" robbery.
