The traditional flower and earth carpets of La Orotava's Corpus Christi have evolved to become a powerful message of pacifism and solidarity with migrants, reflecting a social and humanitarian shift on the island.

Twenty years ago, a group of brave carpet makers in La Orotava challenged conventions by creating a carpet depicting Jesus guiding a boat filled with African people, amidst a xenophobic debate in the Canary Islands. That pioneering initiative, which caused sensation and controversy, has set a precedent, and this year, five carpets explicitly displayed messages of welcome and a "world for all."
The evolution of this tradition, dating back to 1847, is remarkable. While religious and geometric motifs remain, such as the tribute to the Virgen del Carmen in the main square, the message of solidarity with migration has gained unprecedented strength. This year, the central carpet in the town hall square pays tribute to the work of the Red Cross in assisting migrants, also utilizing sands from Las Cañadas del Teide.
Other carpets have addressed contemporary themes, including an image of a mother with her Black child, peace as a banner, and even the complex relationship between humans and artificial intelligence. These ephemeral tapestries, meticulously crafted by various groups and associations, attract numerous visitors and tourists, solidifying the festival as one of the major annual events in Tenerife.
The celebration, which included the preceding Wednesday with wine tasting and activities in various venues, culminated in the Corpus procession. Despite the absence of some authorities due to the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Gran Canaria, this year's edition will be remembered for the flourishing of messages of peace and solidarity in the streets of La Orotava.
