The spokesperson and general secretary of the PSOE in Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González, has harshly criticized the way the municipal government has pushed through the approval of a budget modification worth 21 million euros. According to González, the decision lacks transparency, technical rigor, and institutional respect towards the opposition and citizens.
González emphasized that a decision of this magnitude requires clear and detailed information and should be subjected to serious political debate with sufficient time for analysis. "What is truly historic is that a credit modification of this caliber has been incorporated into a plenary session without being vetted," he stated, adding that "the City Council cannot manage 21 million euros as if it were a minor decision."
The socialist spokesperson read excerpts from municipal technical reports that, he pointed out, contradict the government. These documents conclude that "it is not duly accredited that the modification responds to unavoidable needs," that "the urgency is not justified," and that "greater specification of the expenses to be financed is lacking."
González highlighted that these deficiencies affect five out of the seven areas of the City Council (areas 200, 300, 400, 700, and the 100 area of the mayor's office), which further aggravates the situation. "Not only in one area, but in five of the seven areas of this City Council, the same circumstances occur; not even the mayor with his area has set an example," he declared.
Among the deficiencies documented in the technical reports were the lack of justification for urgency, the absence of a report from the mayor's office, the lack of specific details on budget lines, doubts about the existence of adequate and sufficient credit, and the impact on budgetary stability and the spending rule.
González also criticized the convening of an extraordinary plenary session to approve the expediente without it having been previously vetted in committee. "There is no need to do this, to disrespect us in this way," he stated, emphasizing that the urgency was rejected based on the technical reports themselves.
The PSOE denounces that such actions risk citizens' trust in institutions. González insisted that transparency is a democratic obligation, especially in matters of significant economic and political impact. The socialist group believes the local government is acting with "worrying lack of institutional sensitivity" by not facilitating an open debate on such a large budget modification.
"The lust for power has gotten the better of them, as is evident in the pre-election year; the distribution of these 21 million does not respond to the city's real needs but to the desire to remain in the mayor's office," stated the former mayor, criticizing the allocation to Coalición Canaria and Asamblea Ciudadana Portuense.
"Defending democracy in the City Council also means defending that important decisions are explained, debated, and justified transparently. We will not allow opaque or improvised forms of governance to be normalized," said González. The PSOE of Puerto de la Cruz reiterates its commitment to public management based on legality and transparency, and announces it will continue to scrutinize the municipal government.
González was emphatic in his assessment of the government team's actions: "I will not even delve into ethics and morals, nor into the broken promises of the councilors, because I can state unequivocally that they have lied to our faces."
