The International Festival of Travel and Adventure Literature Periplo began today in Puerto de la Cruz, gathering thirty authors until next October 25th.

The festival, held in Puerto de la Cruz, opens its program focusing on international chronicles, political fiction, and stories of young migrants. Until Sunday, October 25th, Periplo will connect territories, experiences, and contemporary realities through thirty authors.
The opening day included the exhibition ‘Travesías. Menores migrantes, el largo viaje’ (Journeys. Migrant Minors, the Long Journey), a project by José Naranjo and Juan Luis Rod, recounting the stories of thirteen young migrants who arrived alone in the Canary Islands. Subsequently, both authors presented the photobook, edited by PHREE, in a conversation moderated by journalist Ebbaba Hameida.
The event was attended by authorities including the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso; the Vice-Minister of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, Octavio Caraballo; the Director General of Environmental Quality of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Montañés; the Insular Minister of Culture, Museums, and Sports of the Cabildo of Tenerife, José Carlos Acha; and the Insular Director of Tourism Analysis and Strategies, Sonia Pagés Luis.
Mayor Leopoldo Afonso highlighted that 'travel literature allows us to approach other realities, hear different experiences, and better understand the world we share.' He emphasized that 'behind every migratory story there is a person, a history, and circumstances that deserve to be heard'.
The program continued with the presentation of ‘Carbonara con nata’ (Travels to the Past, 2026), by journalist and international correspondent Javier Brandoli. The work addresses issues such as migration, racism, and the environment based on his direct experience. Brandoli discussed his experiences with Leo Santisteban.
The day concluded with the presentation of ‘La República’ (The Republic, 2026), by Mexican writer Jorge Volpi. In conversation with Eduardo García, the author explored this political dystopia set in the United States in late 2026.
Activities at the Lago Martiánez Tent will include interpretation in Spanish Sign Language (LSE), reinforcing the festival's commitment to inclusive cultural offerings.
The festival, organized by the Culture Department of the Puerto de la Cruz City Council and Comando Periplo, is supported by the External Action of the Cabildo of Tenerife, the Ministry of Culture, the Government of the Canary Islands, Casa África, and other entities.
