The municipality of Granadilla de Abona is preparing to host the XXXI Folklore Festival of the Peoples in El Médano, taking place from August 17 to 23. This annual event combines the richness of Canarian tradition with the folklore expressions of diverse world cultures, establishing itself as an international meeting point.
Mayor José Domingo Regalado highlighted the importance of this summer event, stating, "The Folklore Festival of the Peoples is one of the most significant cultural events in our summer calendar and a magnificent opportunity for Granadilla de Abona to once again be a meeting point between peoples and cultures." Regalado invited attendees to enjoy the program, which values Canarian cultural heritage while honoring its roots.
Councilor for Culture and Festivities, Carlos Abismael Díaz, emphasized that the festival "once again turns El Médano into a grand stage for cultural exchange." The program includes training activities, dance encounters, music, parades, and major performances, designed for all audiences with the aim of bringing culture and heritage closer to the citizens.
The week of culture will kick off on August 17 with a traditional pottery workshop (until August 20) and an intensive Canarian folk dance workshop (from August 17 to 21). On August 19, the III Dance Encounter will take place, with a route from Paseo Picacho to the main square, featuring local groups and Cintas de Los Cristianos.
On August 20, the main square will host the Folklore Festival of the municipality's groups, including Aires de Abona, Alisios del Sur, Guaydil, Sentir Sureño, and Viñático de San Isidro. On August 21, following entertainment by Fundación Cultural Ñukanchik from Ecuador, a parade will be held, followed by the official inauguration featuring Los Majuelos (Tenerife), Ñukanchik (Ecuador), and the Folk Dance Ensemble Tucovic (Serbia).
The program continues on August 22 with performances by Tucovic, Ñukanchik, and Guantejina. The closing ceremony on August 23 will feature the show “Mi canto en ti” by Tigaray with Luis Morera.
The event will include the participation of Serbia's Folk Dance Ensemble Tucovic, founded in Belgrade in 1978, and Ecuador's Fundación Cultural Ñukanchik, dedicated to revitalizing Ecuadorian cultural memory. The Canarian representation will feature Tigaray, Herederos de Chasna, Guantejina, and Los Majuelos.
