Granadilla de Abona is preparing to celebrate the XXI edition of the Night Route to the old Ere of Hermano Pedro next Friday, September 11th. This unique walk, which fuses history, tradition, and heritage, pays tribute to the memory of Pedro de San José Betancur, the first Canarian saint.
The initiative, which is free of charge, is organized by the Ayuntamiento de Granadilla de Abona, through the Councillor for Culture and Festivities, Carlos Abismael Díaz Barreto, in collaboration with the Festival Commission of El Médano 2026. It is part of the September festive calendar for the coastal town. Registration opens tomorrow, Friday, September 4th, via the municipal website.
Under the motto 'Where water holds names', the nocturnal route will allow participants to approach the history, tradition, and heritage of Granadilla de Abona, culminating in the surroundings of the Ere of Hermano Pedro.
Carlos Abismael Díaz Barreto, Councillor for Culture and Festivities, highlighted the value of this activity as one of the most special cultural events, defining it as 'an act of meeting and a moment to remember the figure of Hermano Pedro and reaffirm our tradition as a people'. He added that it is an activity that 'allows us to value our heritage and share with neighbors and visitors an experience full of history, emotion, and symbolism'.
The route will begin at 9:00 PM from the central square of El Médano. Participants will walk along the beach promenade, the Los Balos ravine, and the path leading to the Ere, with arrival expected around 9:45 PM. In this natural enclave, a special music and theater performance will take place, featuring the traditional theater group Thynisara and the musical group La Zafra (composed of Félix Morales, David Duque, Pablo Díaz, and Ayla Rodríguez).
The route also serves as a historical journey. Archaeologist Luis Diego Cuscoy recalled that an 'ere' is a natural watering hole used by the Guanches. It was in this place that, over 360 years ago, the young shepherd Pedro de San José Betancur brought his goats to drink, turning this humble space into a symbol of devotion and memory.
With this edition, Granadilla de Abona keeps alive a tradition that unites heritage, history, culture, and citizen participation, inviting residents and visitors to rediscover one of the most emblematic sites linked to the figure of Hermano Pedro.
