This business initiative, which has social support, arises from the critical situation of the courts, considered among the most saturated on the island. The main proposal is the consolidation of both judicial districts to optimize human and material resources.
The demand aligns with the recommendations of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC), which in 2020 described the Granadilla judicial district as “failed” and suggested its annexation to Arona. This stance was reiterated in the TSJC's 2023 report, emphasizing the urgency of unification as the only viable solution for Granadilla.
“"We cannot maintain the current situation. The solution lies in the unification of both judicial districts."
Although this idea was previously raised in 2012 and met with rejection from municipal governments and social groups in Granadilla and San Miguel de Abona, as well as the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), business leaders insist on the necessity of the measure. They argue that while Arona's courts suffer from operational problems due to staff shortages, the situation in Granadilla de Abona is even more critical, with cases taking five years or more to resolve.
In contrast to the unification proposal, the Ministry of Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security of the Canarian Government approved a project in May 2024 to refurbish a premises that will house the new Court of First Instance and Instruction number 5 in Granadilla de Abona. This decision, according to business representatives, could lead to greater dispersion of the courts.
Additionally, business leaders are requesting the creation of a Social Court in Arona, highlighting that the southern region is the area of the island with the highest economic activity and employment rate, leading to a high demand for such courts. The Arona judicial district covers Arona, Adeje, Guía de Isora, and Santiago del Teide, serving approximately 200,000 inhabitants, while Granadilla's district includes Granadilla de Abona, Arico, San Miguel de Abona, and Vilaflor, with around 100,000 inhabitants, both with significant floating populations.
