The Local Government Board of the Tacoronte City Council has approved the fourth phase of the Municipal Cemetery expansion, a strategic project that will create 544 new niches and 168 columbarium.

The Local Government Board of the Tacoronte City Council, in its session on September 29, gave the green light to the execution project for the fourth phase of the Municipal Cemetery expansion. This initiative, drafted by the Municipal Technical Office, aims to guarantee the future capacity of this public facility located on El Calvario street.
The project includes the creation of 544 new niches and 168 columbarium, in addition to two tool rooms. The contract execution budget amounts to 2,127,577 euros, with an estimated construction period of 15 months.
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Tarsis Morales, highlighted that the project's approval represents "a strategic step to ensure that Tacoronte has sufficient capacity in its municipal cemetery for the coming years, but also to continue developing in an orderly manner a project that was conceived from the beginning with a comprehensive vision".
Morales added that the intervention is not solely focused on adding niches but on continuing a cemetery model that combines necessary funerary capacity with open spaces, walkways, gardens, accessibility, and careful integration with existing phases.
The development will take place on a municipal plot located north of the cemetery, within the Santa Catalina area. The specific scope of the fourth phase covers 2,095 square meters, comprising 1,103m² for walkways, 860m² for gardens, and the remainder for funerary modules and tool rooms.
The architectural proposal maintains the philosophy of the integral cemetery expansion project, envisioning the new platform as a terraced park that utilizes the natural slope of the land. It will connect with the perimeter walkway and the central axis linking the new extensions with the old cemetery.
The project includes the complete urbanization of the space: paving, landscaped areas, lighting, street furniture, enclosures, and the necessary low-voltage installations for lighting, plumbing, irrigation, sanitation, and storm drainage. The new elements will follow the same scheme, dimensions, morphology, and finishes as previous phases to maintain the architectural unity of the complex.
One of the novelties of this phase will be the execution of garden niches, a solution included in the cemetery's overall strategic project and incorporated for the first time in this development.
This fourth phase continues an expansion process initiated in 2006. The first phase was executed on a terrace adjacent to the old cemetery. The second phase, completed in 2018, laterally extended the development with a module of niches and columbarium. The third phase, carried out in 2020, incorporated another complete module and paving.
The city's mayor, Sandra Izquierdo, positively assessed the approval, describing it as "a very necessary action for the municipality as it responds to a matter of planning and responsibility for the coming years".
Izquierdo recalled that "the cemetery is an essential public service, so we must anticipate future needs, ensuring that Tacoronte has adequate facilities to serve families".
The mayor added that this phase allows for "looking beyond the immediate need for new niches," and that they continue to build a cemetery "conceived as a dignified, accessible, well-maintained space connected to previous phases," aiming for orderly growth while maintaining the quality of the environment.
