The Tacoronte Farmer's Market is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, establishing itself as a benchmark for the commercialization of agricultural and livestock products on the island of Tenerife. The central event will be held on Monday, October 5th, at 7:00 PM, in the Municipal Auditorium Capitol. This occasion will bring together institutional representatives, producers, and individuals linked to the market's history to recognize their contribution to the primary sector and the local economy.
The event will be presented by journalist Zenaido Hernández and will feature the participation of the mayor-president of Tacoronte, María Sandra Izquierdo Fernández, and the president of the Tacoronte Farmer's Market Association, José Ángel Rodríguez García, along with other authorities and key guests.
The program includes speeches, the screening of a commemorative audiovisual reviewing the market's trajectory since its founding in 1981, and a performance by the Parranda Los Desconocidos de Tacoronte. Recognition plaques will be presented to founders and collaborators, followed by a signing of the Book of Honor, an official photograph, and a toast with local products.
Born from the initiative of farmers in 1981, the Market was created to address the need for farmers in the Tacoronte-Acentejo region to have a space to sell their produce. It was a project driven by farmers, the Tacoronte City Council, and the Tacoronte Agrarian Extension Agency, drawing inspiration from the experience in Vega de San Mateo.
Throughout its 45 years, the Market has maintained direct contact between producers and consumers, promoting the sale of local products and fostering customer trust. The entity highlights the loyalty of its buyers and the commitment of producers, who adapt their crops to demand, contributing to the evolution and modernization of the products.
The Market has become a driver of the municipal and regional economy, serving as a significant source of sales and income for numerous farmers. It also brings local produce closer to citizens, strengthening sales channels and the link between the territory and consumers. Located in the San Juan neighborhood, it is an integral part of Tacoronte's commercial and agricultural identity.
Currently, it features 106 stalls offering a variety of goods produced in the area on Saturdays and Sundays. Approximately 3000 people regularly attend, valuing the freshness and quality of the products. Weekly sales exceed €20,000, with an estimated annual generation of over €1.1 million.
The Tacoronte City Council, through the Primary Sector Department led by Iván Hernández, reinforces its commitment to the Market and its participants. The council works annually to enhance services and facilities, strengthening its role as a local primary sector benchmark and preserving its value as a marketplace and meeting point.
