Researcher at the University Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety (IUSA), Antonio Jesús Fernández Rodríguez, will offer an educational talk this Friday, November 6th, starting at 10:30 AM, at the Gabinete Literario in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The session, titled ‘Why Do Whales Die? How to Heal a Huge Wild Animal Living in the High Seas?’, will delve into the most interesting aspects of marine mammals' lives, their health status, and the various causes of their deaths.
The talk, aimed at students and the general public, will bring attendees closer to the research conducted by IUSA to decipher factors that may alter the normal development of cetaceans' lives and whether they are the triggers for their demise. Elements such as recreational boats, military maneuvers, and the use of sonars, which directly or indirectly influence the survival of these mammals, will be examined.
The ‘Ínsula 2026’ festival, held from November 3rd to 6th, is an initiative by the Gabinete Literario aiming to bring science to the public, especially young Canarians, under the slogan ‘Eating the Future’. About twenty experts in Earth, Ocean, and Sky will participate in talks for all audiences.
