Lanzarote-born referee Alejandro Hernández has marked a new milestone in the islands' football history by debuting in a World Cup. The official refereed the match between Brazil and Haiti early Saturday morning, held at the Lincoln Financial Field stadium in Philadelphia, United States, in front of over 68,000 spectators. The game concluded with a 3-0 victory for the Brazilian team.
In this notable performance, José Enrique Naranjo from Gran Canaria served as one of Hernández's assistants. This highlights the Canarian presence in an unprecedented debut and enhances the work of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Interinsular Football Federation of Las Palmas, where both officials trained.
The referee from Lanzarote demonstrated a solid performance throughout the match. He cautioned Douglas Santos from Brazil, and Carlens Arcus, Frantzdy Pierrot, and Danley Jean Jacques from the Haitian team. Additionally, he applied a new rule that penalizes a goalkeeper with an indirect free kick if they delay the goal kick for more than five seconds.
