The Government of the Canary Islands has launched an awareness campaign to combat the rise of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) among the young population of the islands, promoting prevention and condom use.

The most prevalent Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in the Canary Islands, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, are significantly affecting the young population, especially the age group between 15 and 29 years old. Data from 2023 reveals that 63% of new HIV diagnoses were recorded in individuals under 35 years old.
According to reports from the General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands, the archipelago exceeds the national average in HIV incidence, with 5.9 new diagnoses per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022, compared to the Spanish average of 5.4. In response to this situation, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families, in collaboration with the Canary Islands School of Health and Social Services (ESSSCAN), has launched the «Less than a Millimeter» campaign.

"This campaign is included within the action plan we have developed for youth, which has now been placed at the center of public action."

The main objective of this initiative is to counteract the surge in STIs on the islands, especially among young people, by promoting prevention, correct condom use, and self-care as normalized habits in sexual life. The campaign aims to reach this audience through a musical composition and a video for social media and digital platforms.
In addition to the audiovisual material, an official website has been created with updated information on STIs, prevention resources, and a list of collaborating entities. Condoms will be distributed at events such as the Cook Music Fest and the Granca LiveFest, and training activities will be carried out in educational centers. The initiative also seeks the adherence of city councils and other institutions to ensure its long-term reach.

"Less than a millimeter becomes the perfect symbol of prevention: a powerful reminder that a small gesture is enough to protect your life and the lives of those around you."
