The Canarias Cinema jury, comprising the founder and co-director of the Nantes Spanish Film Festival, a doctor and author, and a producer, screenwriter, and director, announced its verdict on Monday, April 27, at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. The decision followed the evaluation of four feature films and fourteen short films in competition.
“"It introduces us to the journey of grief through a family story and the metaphor of Canarian wrestling."
The Richard Leacock Award for Best Feature Film, endowed with 3,500 euros, was granted to La lucha (2025). The jury praised the work for its rigorous research-based script, virtuous direction of non-professional actors, and visually powerful staging. The masterful cinematography, which blends the depiction of the territory's geography with the intimate space of the characters, and the attention to detail in art direction and editing, were also highlighted.
This feature film, the only Spanish entry at the International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI), had already secured three awards in Buenos Aires: the Special Jury Prize, Best Art Direction, and the Grand Signis Award.
“"The questioning of identity that transcends the purely individual to explore the influence of territory on personal construction."
Meanwhile, the Richard Leacock Award for Best Short Film, with a prize of 2,000 euros, went for the second consecutive year to Somos islas (2026). The jury valued its exploration of identity and the influence of territory on personal construction, as well as its narrative articulated from personal archives and a subtle voice-over.
Additionally, a jury composed of associates from Cima, the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media, presented an award to the editor of the feature film La lucha for its organic and rhythmic editing. A special mention was also given to the short film Somos islas for its simple yet effective narrative that champions the unique identity of each woman, drawing an analogy with the authenticity of the archipelago's islands.
Participating titles were also eligible for a distribution award from the Canarian audiovisual production company Digital 104, which was also granted to the short film Somos islas (2025).
