The Government of the Canary Islands has approved the design and structure of the Canary Islands Fiscal Office, an initiative aimed at strengthening support for the activities of the Public Prosecutor's Office in the archipelago, as published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands on April 16.

This project, initially conceived in 2018, aligns with the provisions of Organic Law 1/2025, also known as the Bolaños Law, which addresses efficiency measures in public justice services. The Minister of the Presidency, Nieves Lady Barreto, emphasized that this approval concludes an effort that had been stalled during the previous legislature.

"We are finalizing a 2018 project that was put on hold in the previous legislature and which develops the organization of the Fiscal Office to support the activities of the Public Prosecutor's Office in the Canary Islands."

The office's model, promoted by the Deputy Minister of Justice and Security and the Chief Prosecutor of the Canary Islands, received favorable support from the Justice Participation and Advisory Commission on March 6, 2026. The organizational structure of the Fiscal Office in the Canary Islands will be led by the Chief Prosecutor and will include a Superior Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, with its Territorial Section, as well as Provincial Prosecutor's Offices in Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with their respective territorial and specialized sections, and the Lanzarote-Puerto del Rosario Area Prosecutor's Office.
The organization of the fiscal offices is based on a flexible scheme, which includes functional areas such as support for leadership, procedural and investigative support, and general support, adapting to the characteristics and size of each dependency. The direction of the Fiscal Office will fall to the heads of the Superior Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, the provincial prosecutor's offices, and the area prosecutor's offices.
Personnel assigned to the Fiscal Office will functionally depend on these leadership positions and organically on the General Directorate responsible for personnel matters in the Administration of Justice. The office may include positions of free appointment, specialized positions (such as the Office coordinator, responsible for planning and management), and generic positions (managers, procedural-administrative processors, and judicial assistance). Additionally, a Support Unit for the Chief Prosecutor of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands will assist in representation, institutional relations with public authorities, communication, citizen services, reports, statistics, personnel management, material resources, information, and documentation.
