Comercial Abraham, one of the oldest clothing stores in Arucas, has been open for almost fifty years, now under the management of its second family generation. The City Council has recognized its trajectory with the gold medal of the city, highlighting its "great capacity for adaptation and contribution to the commercial fabric."
Abraham El Jaber, about to turn 91, although retired, maintains his daily connection with the business and its clientele. Born in Syria, his parents settled in the Canary Islands at the beginning of the last century, starting their commercial journey in Tenoya and later in Arucas. After being orphaned in his adolescence, El Jaber began his business path, first with a brother-in-law and then establishing his own store in 1985 on Alcalde Suárez Franchy street.
The businessman recalls how, at 16, he had to collect debts on foot throughout the municipality and nearby areas like Firgas, an experience that allowed him to meet many people and build trust. Initially, the store offered a wide range of products, from appliances to clothing, functioning as a "mini El Corte Inglés." Over time, it has specialized in fashion, particularly for men and women, offering complete suits for around 200 euros and uniforms for public schools in Arucas.
Abraham El Jaber, married to Rita María Marrero for 61 years, emphasizes the importance of adapting to new times and maintaining a close relationship with customers. The store has seen three generations of the same family pass through, and loyalty is high, with only a small percentage of bad payers throughout its history. A memorable anecdote is that of a customer who came in desperately at dawn on Three Kings' Day looking for an overcoat.
Currently, the business is in the hands of his children, Abraham, Octavio (known as Abraham due to his daily presence), and Mabel. They, having grown up in the commercial environment, have chosen to continue the family legacy, acknowledging their parents' efforts. They work alongside Mapi, an employee with nearly four decades of service. The family is proud of the gold medal, recognizing that they attract customers from other areas such as the south of the island, Guía, and Gáldar, due to their personalized service and the quality of their products for those over 60.
