A Sahrawi migrant residing in Canarias has reported to the courts of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that his brother was allegedly murdered earlier this month by other occupants of the patera with which he was trying to reach the islands.

In a complaint filed on the 14th, Elouali El Houcini informed the duty court of his brother Daha's disappearance. Daha had boarded a patera on May 7th from Cabo Bojador. According to testimonies and recordings he has gathered, his brother was thrown into the sea during the journey.
The vessel, an inflatable boat with 62 occupants of Moroccan and Sub-Saharan origin (all men except one woman), was rescued on May 9th by the Guardamar Urania of Salvamento Marítmo and transferred to Arguineguín. A witness told El Houcini that an altercation between Moroccan occupants and his brother, who is Sahrawi, resulted in the latter being thrown overboard.
The complainant, who had already informed the National Police, requests the judge to take measures to secure evidence and protect witnesses, warning that the events could constitute a crime of murder or homicide. He asks that potential perpetrators or witnesses not be expelled or transferred until they are interviewed.
He details that some of the patera's occupants are reportedly still housed at the initial reception center Canarias 50, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The missing person, Daha El Houcini, was 35 years old and the father of a four-year-old child. His family describes him as an activist for the Sahrawi cause who was detained after participating in the Gdeim Izik camp in 2010.
