Founded in 1966 by Andrés García, this family business began its journey at the former Junta de Obras del Puerto, later expanding with several locations across the city. The family, originally from Moya and comprising eight siblings, pioneered the preparation of homemade meals in the area.
In 1980, one of the brothers, Santiago García, opened the establishment on Fernando Guanarteme street, offering authentic Canarian cuisine to workers and residents. Currently, the management of the Guanarteme location is in the hands of Santiago's daughter, who has inherited the legacy and passion for the business.
“"My father didn't close because this was his whole life, and I continue here because I feel the same way."
The bar's manager fondly recalls a time when the neighborhood housed numerous businesses, such as the old Fosforera and various fish factories and workshops. She highlights how the urban landscape has evolved, with the business adapting to new times without losing its identity.
The change in Guanarteme became more evident from 2010, coinciding with the construction crisis and urban boom, which included the creation of the Las Arenas shopping center. Despite the difficulties, the establishment has managed to stay afloat, adapting to a clientele that has shifted from mainly laborers and taxi drivers to include new residents and tourists.
The key to its success lies in the continuity of the homemade food tradition, a fundamental pillar since its inception. The promotion of local consumption and recommendations from surf schools and holiday accommodations have helped the bar remain a meeting point where residents and visitors can experience the authentic essence of the neighborhood.
