Unemployment in the Canary Islands Decreases by 763 in May

Registered unemployment in the Canary Islands fell by 763 people in May, representing a 0.52% decrease from the previous month and a 4.98% drop compared to May 2025.

The archipelago concluded May with a total of 144,598 unemployed individuals. This figure signifies an annual reduction of 7,573 people compared to the same month in 2025, according to data released by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.
In the province of Las Palmas, registered unemployment decreased by 397 people (-0.53% monthly), reaching 74,448 jobless. Year-on-year, the reduction was 4,541 people (-5.75%). Meanwhile, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, unemployment stood at 70,150 people after a monthly decrease of 366 (-0.52%) and an annual drop of 3,032 (-4.14%).
By economic sectors, agriculture accounted for 2,329 unemployed, industry 5,290, construction 11,632, and services 114,583. The group with no prior employment comprised 10,764 individuals. Compared to the previous month, unemployment decreased in agriculture (-22), industry (-57), and construction (-177), while it fell by 655 in services. The group with no prior employment saw an increase of 148 people.
In May, 51,926 contracts were signed in the Canary Islands, 1,104 fewer than in April and 2,577 fewer than in May 2025. Of these, 22,808 were permanent and 29,118 were temporary. Permanent contracts decreased by 5.31% compared to April and 1.30% year-on-year, while temporary contracts increased by 0.60% monthly and fell by 7.25% annually.
In April, 29,561 unemployment benefits were claimed in the Canary Islands, with an average processing time of 0.43 days. The number of beneficiaries reached 93,766, with public spending on these aids totaling 102,941,000 euros.
