Jonás Trueba, a director known for his distinctive cinematic style, has released Los ilusos 13+13, an expanded and revised version of his 2013 film, Los ilusos. This new installment, arriving 13 years after the original premiere, adds visual elements such as color scenes and different framings to the work that Trueba himself considers his "zero film."
Originally shot between late 2011 and June 2012, Los ilusos explored life, human relationships, and the cinematic vocation through everyday gestures and encounters. The new version, Los ilusos 13+13, plays with the idea of "rebirth" for films, integrating full-color shots into the original black and white and showing the director himself giving instructions in some takes.
The film pays homage to figures such as Jacques Rivette, Nacho Vegas, and Luis García Berlanga through his work El verdugo, and includes references to silent cinema. The movie retains its cast of familiar faces from Trueba's cinematic universe, including Francesco Carril, Aura Garrido, and Vito Sanz, and celebrates analog filmmaking in the face of the digital age.
The soundtrack features the participation of the group El hijo, performing in an apartment, adding authenticity to the portrayal of their characters' lives.
