The Aulario A of the ULPGC's Faculty of Health Sciences now houses this pioneering classroom, featuring 32 new microscopes and 33 digital cameras connected in a network. This equipment, similar to that found in only one other Spanish university, the University of Barcelona, will «improve teaching capacity» across nine subjects in the undergraduate degrees of Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Biomedical Engineering.
The official presentation was led by the rector of the ULPGC, Lluís Serra, and the Dean of Health Sciences, María del Mar Tavío. The networked camera system offers a significant advantage over traditional microscopes, allowing the instructor to monitor all 32 devices simultaneously from a single screen. This facilitates immediate correction of focus or preparation errors, eliminating the need for students to physically move to the microscopes.
This interactivity fosters collaborative learning by enabling the digital projection of individual findings to the entire class. Students can manipulate and discuss images in real-time, interacting with both the instructor and their peers. The new equipment also simplifies the capture of high-quality photos and videos, streamlining report creation and improving ergonomics by reducing visual and postural fatigue through the use of personal devices.
The total investment in this new Digital Microscopy classroom amounts to 60,000 euros. This innovative resource, driven by the areas within the Department of Morphology, led by Cell Biology, joins the offerings of very few Spanish universities.
