The Vegueta Market, the oldest market in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will be the central theme of the float representing the capital in the traditional Romería-Ofrenda of Nuestra Señora del Pino, to be held on September 7th in Teror. Designed by the Canarian Institute of Traditions under the slogan 'The Vegueta Market, a gateway to knowledge and flavors,' the initiative aims to recognize the work of the archipelago's farmers, ranchers, and fishermen.
During the project's presentation, held at the Plaza de Santa Ana, attendees included the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias; the Councilor for Culture, Josué Íñiguez; and the coordinator of the Canarian Institute of Traditions, David Naranjo. They explained that the produce displayed on the float is a collaboration with Mercalaspalmas, and the food items will later be donated to those in need.
Carolina Darias emphasized the importance of presenting the float early to involve the public and highlight Canarian traditions. She stressed that preserving customs is crucial for 'keeping memory alive' for future generations, mentioning previous initiatives like the Gran Baile de Taifas and the Finados night to safeguard 'our Canarian identity'.
The capital's representation will also feature performances by the group Los Gofiones and the Flor Canaria del Atlántico Folkloric Association. Both groups will accompany the float to the Basilica, where they will perform an 'isa' dedicated to the Virgen del Pino. David Naranjo noted that the Vegueta Market was chosen to honor those who open their stalls daily in the traditional markets.
Regarding event security, Darias assured a special security detail for the anticipated large crowds on September 7th, highlighting the 'maximum collaboration' between the municipalities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Teror. A 'security board' is planned to coordinate the deployment.
