A cargo ship flying the flag of the Comoros, intercepted in the Atlantic by the Civil Guard, has docked at the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with one of the largest cocaine seizures recorded to date in Spain.

Agents from the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard carried out the operation that culminated in the arrival of the vessel, named Arconian, and its crew at the Canarian port on Sunday afternoon. The ship was escorted by a Civil Guard patrol boat after its interception.
The freighter had departed from Freetown, Sierra Leone, on April 22 and, according to its declared route, was heading to the port of Benghazi, Libya. The interception occurred off the coast of Dakhla, in the Western Sahara, and resulted in the arrest of 23 individuals.
The operation is being conducted under judicial secrecy and by order of the Audiencia Nacional, so authorities have refrained from providing specific details. However, sources close to the investigation suggest that the amount of seized drugs could exceed the nearly 10 tons (9,994 kilos) captured in January on the cargo ship United S, which was unloaded in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
That operation, known as 'White Tide', was considered the largest maritime seizure in Europe at the time and resulted in the arrest of 13 crew members, in addition to the seizure of a firearm. International agencies such as the US DEA, the UK NCA, the Brazilian Federal Police, the Intelligence Center against Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO), and the MAOC participated in the operation.
