This pledge, made on Monday, April 13, 2026, is backed by approximately thirty companies from the province of Las Palmas. This will mark the first papal visit to the islands, with logistical details to be finalized upon the Pontiff's return from a trip to Africa.
The Bishop of the Diocese of Canarias, José Mazuelos, accompanied by Auxiliary Bishop Cristóbal Déniz, expressed gratitude for the economic support from the business community. It is anticipated that after Pope Leo XIV concludes his journey to Africa, a Vatican commission will travel to the Canary Islands to coordinate the extensive logistics and security arrangements for the papal stay, which will be managed by the Holy See and the Swiss Guard.
“"We understand the importance of the visit of a world leader, such as the Holy Pope, to the Canary Islands, of sufficient relevance for all of society to show its support."
While full details will be released by the end of the month, Mazuelos confirmed that the Pope is scheduled to visit Arguineguín, on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, a location notable for having received thousands of migrants arriving by boat in 2020. He will also celebrate mass in one of the sports venues in the Siete Palmas neighborhood of the island's capital. Other arrangements, such as his overnight stay, will be determined by the Vatican commission.
Pedro Ortega, president of the CCE, highlighted that businesses have stepped forward to support this visit, deeming it crucial for enhancing the islands' visibility and addressing the migration issue, following the precedent set by the late Pope Francis. Ortega emphasized that this collaboration is a collective effort, showcasing the business community's unified support for this significant event in the Canary Islands.
