The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be adorned to celebrate Armed Forces Day with a comprehensive program of events designed to bring military work closer to the public. The activities, starting from May 21st, aim to foster collaboration between civilian and military institutions and ensure security.
The central event will take place on Saturday, May 23rd, at the Plaza de la Música (Plaza de Jerónimo Saavedra). At 6:15 PM, a solemn flag-lowering ceremony will be held, followed by a ground parade and a spectacular air show featuring F-18 fighter jets from the 46th Wing based at Gando.
Throughout Saturday, starting at 10:00 AM in the same square, there will be a solemn flag-raising ceremony and the opening of a static and dynamic exhibition of military vehicles and equipment. Additionally, various dynamic demonstrations will be performed by participating units from the Army, the Navy, the Air and Space Force, the Civil Guard, and the Military Emergencies Unit (UME).
As part of the demonstrations, a sea rescue exercise is planned around 1:00 PM in the La Cícer area of Las Canteras beach, conducted by a 'Super Puma' helicopter from the 802 Search and Rescue Squadron, weather permitting.
The celebration week will also have a charitable component. On Wednesday, May 21st, the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus will host a benefit concert by the Music Unit of the Canary Air Command, with proceeds going to the Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente, which supports children with cancer.
The program also includes a combat demonstration by the Army, canine exhibitions from various units, improvised explosive device (IED) disposal demonstrations by the Navy, and visits to military units, conferences, and simulators.
