The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, accompanied by councilor Carlos Díaz, visited the ongoing construction on the Paseo de Chil wall, near Doramas Park. The project, which has lasted over a year, represents an investment exceeding one million euros and is expected to be completed in approximately two weeks.
The work focuses on a section of about 50 meters, situated between the stairs of the monument to Fernando León y Castillo and a private school. The primary objective is to ensure the firmness of the wall and the surrounding terrain, thereby improving safety conditions in this part of the capital.
A new retaining structure has been built behind the existing wall to reinforce the entire assembly. Subsequently, the current wall will be manually dismantled, piece by piece, to reuse the original stone in the cladding of the new structure, thus preserving its appearance and heritage elements.
The intervention will allow for the maintenance of the wall's current appearance and the preservation of its constituent stone elements, integrating the new construction solution into the Paseo de Chil environment.
This intervention rectifies previous issues, such as the burial of the original heritage work designed by architect Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí, which was part of the Doramas Park complex. The initial plan by the Urban Planning department was to clad the original piece, a part of the capital's often-neglected heritage, with quarry stone from Arucas.
The process has been lengthy, with the statue of Fernando León y Castillo, a work by Mariano Benlliure, being enclosed by fencing for over a year. The project also includes improvements to the drainage system to facilitate water evacuation and prevent accumulation that could compromise the area's stability.
Local civic groups have repeatedly voiced concerns about the condition of the heritage ensemble stretching from Doramas Park to Altavista. It is anticipated that the original physiognomy of this feature will be respected upon completion of the works.
