Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Honor Dania Dévora During 2026 Foundational Festivities

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will commemorate its 548th anniversary and welcome summer with the 2026 Foundational Festivities, an event integrating tradition, culture, and a heartfelt tribute to Dania Dévora, a key figure in the city's cultural scene.

The Foundational Festivities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, taking place from June 12 to 26, will mark the city's 548th anniversary. This year's program will feature a special tribute to Dania Dévora, who served as the festival's pregonera (official announcer) in 2019, was named an Adopted Daughter of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and was an essential figure in the city's cultural activities before her passing last March.
Mayor Carolina Darias and the Councilor for Culture, Josué Íñiguez, presented the festival's poster, which champions the city's bid slogan for European Capital of Culture 2031, 'Rebellion of Geography'. Both emphasized the significance of the 2026 celebrations, coinciding with the capital of Gran Canaria's selection as a finalist in the European process. The mayor stated that the city is 'singular, capable of generating culture, abundant talent, and knowledge from the Atlantic towards Europe and the world,' inviting attendees 'to recognize ourselves in our history, to value our heritage,' and highlighting the city as 'dynamic, innovative, and proud of its diversity'.
Councilor for Culture, Josué Íñiguez, explained that the program's design aims to 'celebrate our history, the history of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through culture, encounter, and citizen participation,' promoting culture as 'a space for encounter where citizens, residents, decide what is important and what is not, and give shared meaning to our own lives and the city'.
The festivities will commence on Friday, June 12, at the Plaza de Santa Ana with the Pregón delivered by Lourdes Santana, director of Cadena SER in the Canary Islands, followed by the Gran Canaria Big Band. On the same Friday, in the gardens of the Castillo de La Luz, the Municipal Symphonic Band will present a prelude featuring multi-instrumentalist Abraham Cupeiro.
The musical program will continue with events like 'Music in the heart of Vegueta' on Sunday, June 14, moved to a morning slot in the courtyards of the Casas Consistoriales, the Colegio de Abogados, the Fundación Mapfre Canarias, the Casa de Colón, and the squares of Pilar Nuevo, San Agustín, and the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País de Gran Canaria, featuring performances by Súbito Koral, Archinautas, 3 Aries, Timple & Cuarteto de cuerdas, La Musicleta, Barrio de Tango, and Son x Tres.
On Saturday, June 13, Cristina Ramos will present the concert '60 years of soul in the Atlantic' at the Plaza de Santa Ana, a tribute to the era when the group Los Canarios, led by Teddy Bautista, explored the Memphis sound. The evening will feature Cristina Ramos, the City Dock Band, and the presence of Toda y Teddy Bautista.
On June 19 and 20, the event 'Concierto Sanjuanero' by Olga Cerpa and Mestisay, presented as 'La costa de los cantares' (The Coast of Songs), will build sonic bridges between the Canary Islands and Africa at the Plaza de Santa Ana on Friday, June 19, featuring the singer from Guinea-Bissau, Eneida Marta.
On Saturday, June 20, the Plaza de Santa Ana will host the premiere of the Festival Elepegecé, dedicated to contemporary rock, with performances by Morgan, Los vinagres, Good Franco, and Baldosa, along with DJ sets by Aquiles Orquídea. On the same day, the initiative 'Opera for All' will broadcast live on a big screen in the Plaza del Tenor Stagno the final performance of the 59th Opera Season of Las Palmas de Gran CanariaAlfredo Kraus, featuring Puccini's 'Turandot'.
The tribute to Dania Dévora will take place on Thursday, June 18, at the Plaza de Santa Ana with the session 'Music and Verses for Dania Dévora'. Mayor Carolina Darias remembered Dévora as 'a woman committed to culture, creation, and international projection,' an 'essential figure for understanding the cultural evolution of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria'.
On Tuesday, June 23, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will hold its Institutional Act of Honors and Distinctions, followed by concerts and fireworks at Los Muellitos. The stage at the Plaza de la Música will feature a concert by Álvaro de Luna and a 'De verbena' session with Tataband and DJ sets.
The musical closing will be performed by the Municipal Symphonic Band on Friday, June 26, at the Castillo de La Luz, with a repertoire presented by crooner Fasur Rodríguez.

The Night Walk, coordinated by the city's official chronicler, Juan José Laforet, will guide participants through historical sites of the founding neighborhood. Children's activities will take place on Saturdays, June 13 and 20, at Parque Doramas, and on Sunday, June 21, at the park's Auditorium, with events such as 'Borondona y Arigato, cuento que te canto', 'La banda mocosa', a circus show, and 'La canción de Adji'. The Espacio Cultural Jesús Arencibia will host the children's production 'Si los peces hablaran' (If the Fish Could Talk) on Sunday, June 14.
In the sports arena, simultaneous chess matches will be held at the Plaza de Santa Ana on June 20, open to chess players of all ages and levels.
