Las Palmas tests South Korean technology for connectivity in challenging areas

The City Council will trial a system that uses metallic surfaces to transmit information in car parks and emergency facilities.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will study a new way to improve connectivity in spaces where conventional networks face obstacles, using South Korean technology.

The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will participate as a pilot in the K-Inno program of the Government of the Republic of Korea to trial an innovative technology offering an alternative to WiFi and traditional cabling in hard-to-reach environments.
The system, developed by the South Korean company SunnyWave Technologies under the name Aurora, uniquely utilizes metallic surfaces for information transmission. This feature aims to overcome the limitations of conventional networks in places like underground car parks, fire stations, and emergency centers.
The city will test the technology in municipal facilities, including car parks managed by Sagulpa, the Fire and Rescue Service, and the Municipal Emergency Center (Cemelpa). Guaguas Municipales has also expressed interest in evaluating its application in their services.
The primary goal is to assess the technology's ability to connect sensors and other devices in locations where deploying new cabling or standard wireless coverage presents difficulties, by leveraging existing metallic infrastructure.
Representatives from South Korea recently visited the city to inspect potential test sites and study locations, in collaboration with Presidency Councillor Francisco Hernández Spínola and General Coordinator of Modernization Roberto Moreno.
