The Loro Parque Fundación and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) have launched a scientific project focused on the recovery of the seahorse in the Canary archipelago.

This pioneering initiative encompasses several crucial phases for the survival of this marine species. Key actions include the genetic characterization of the seahorse, essential for understanding its diversity and population health status.
Furthermore, the project involves the development of captive breeding programs, aiming to increase the number of specimens and ensure their long-term viability. These programs are vital to counteract the threats the species faces in its natural habitat.
The repopulation of seahorses in strategic areas of the archipelago will be another pillar of the project, seeking to reintroduce the species into ecosystems where its presence has diminished or disappeared. Concurrently, social participation actions will be carried out to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting the marine ecosystems of the Canary Islands.
