Marine Pollution Pre-Alert in Las Palmas After Thousand Square Meter Slick Detected

The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands activated the protocol after locating a thousand square meter slick east of the Reina Sofía pier.

The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has activated a marine pollution pre-alert along the coast of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, following the detection of an approximately thousand square meter slick east of the tip of the Reina Sofía pier.

The slick, covering about 1,000 square meters, was located less than two nautical miles from the main pier of the Port of Las Palmas. In response, the Port Authority initiated its internal emergency plan in phase 1, and the National Maritime Plan was also activated to emergency situation 1.
According to information from the General Directorate of Emergencies, Salvamento Marítimo is keeping the spill under control. The vessel Salvamar Nunki is currently in the area, performing mechanical dispersion tasks to contain the affected area.
The activation of this pre-alert, within the framework of PLATECA, aims to strengthen coordination among the various administrations and organizations involved. It also seeks to ensure continuous monitoring of the situation and the availability of all necessary resources to address the incident.
