The Spanish Executive has acknowledged to Canarian authorities the need to adjust national legislation to comply with the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum (PEMA). This framework, applicable across the European Union from June 12, 2026, drives significant changes in migration management and international protection.
In response to a parliamentary inquiry from Canary Islands Coalition (CC) deputy Cristina Valido, the Government detailed that two draft laws are already in preparation. One will focus on the Asylum Law, and the other on the Organic Law of Immigration. The objective is to ensure complete transposition of the European reception directive.
“"part of its content will need to be «specified or adapted» in national legislation."
PEMA, comprising nine regulations and one directive, aims to update EU migration management rules. Although European regulations have direct effect, the Government emphasizes the importance of adapting content to national legislation for proper implementation.
In addition to modifications to the Asylum and Immigration Laws, Migration is also preparing a royal decree to alter the current regulation of the reception system for international protection.
