The Popular Parliamentary Group will present a proposal in the next Plenary Session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands to allow pets to accompany patients in the Canary Islands Health Service, aiming to humanize healthcare.

The initiative, to be debated in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, emphasizes the positive effects of the bond between people and animals. Various studies support that this interaction helps reduce stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels in hospitalized patients, improving their overall well-being.

"The presence of pets alongside their owners has a positive impact on the mental health of hospitalized individuals."

This measure is particularly relevant for patients with extended stays or those facing complex surgical procedures, as it fosters a more optimistic attitude towards recovery and breaks the monotony of hospitalization. Furthermore, for mobile patients, these visits from pets can encourage physical activity.
Although successful experiences with companion animals already exist in the social and health sector of the Canary Islands, public hospitals in the region have not yet implemented similar programs. Therefore, the proposal urges the Government of the Canary Islands to develop a specific protocol that ensures the safety and hygiene of these visits.
This protocol will need to define key aspects such as the types of authorized animals, access requirements, internal circuits within hospital centers, and the necessary conditions to ensure compatibility with the proper functioning of health services. Additionally, the proposal stipulates that pet access will only be authorized with a favorable medical report and provided that the patient's and the center's conditions allow it.
With this initiative, the Popular Parliamentary Group reaffirms its commitment to the humanization of healthcare in the Canary Islands, seeking to integrate measures that enhance the comprehensive well-being of patients, following the line of other recent approvals such as the right of mothers to be accompanied during C-sections.
