This new facility, promoted by the Protection and Animal Welfare department, aims to reinforce the commitment established in the agreement signed with the Association for Respect and Commitment to Animals and Nature (Arycan). The council provides the use of the infrastructure, while Arycan is responsible for equipping the operating room with all necessary clinical material.
The initiative solidifies Telde as a pioneering municipality in feline colony management. Over the past 18 months, more than 1,000 cats have been sterilized, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordination between local administration and collaborating entities. The goal is to perform an average of 10 interventions per week to prevent overpopulation.
The collaboration agreement extends beyond surgery, including deworming, vaccination, and microchip identification with registration in Zoocat for each animal treated. The City Council, through Gesplan, supplies the necessary veterinary materials and manages animal transfers, while Arycan offers training to registered colony managers.
Furthermore, this agreement allows Telde to participate in toxicological studies with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, using felines as “sentinel species” to monitor the municipality's environmental health.
