Anticipation is growing in Gran Canaria for the imminent visit of Pope Leo XIV, an event that promises to be historic and is already generating palpable fervor in the island's parishes. The mass that the pontiff will officiate next Thursday, June 11, at the Estadio de Gran Canaria will feature the presence of the island's two most revered images: the Virgen del Pino and the Santo Cristo de Telde.
This encounter, described as 'historic' by Jorge Martín de la Coba, parish priest of the Basilica of Teror, will mark the first time the Santo Cristo de Telde ascends to the Villa Mariana. This event will take place after the conclusion of the holy mass in Siete Palmas.
Both in Teror and Telde, the activity is considerable. Jorge Martín de la Coba, parish priest of Teror and originally from Telde, and Antonio Juan López, parish priest of San Juan de Telde and a native of Teror, share the excitement of this event. Both emphasize that the transfer of the images will be carried out privately, following an exhaustive protocol due to their great heritage value.
Antonio Juan López highlights the pride of the papal visit and the overflowing enthusiasm to see two images of great devotion take center stage in the Eucharist. 'The Pope is coming to bring us words of encouragement and messages that will not go unnoticed,' he stated, anticipating that his visit 'will leave us with tasks and a legacy'.
For his part, Jorge de la Coba considers the papal visit to be a 'revitalizer for diocesan life,' dividing the trip into three phases: preparation, presentation of the diocesan reality, and the commitment that his messages will bring.
The emotion intensifies when recalling that in 1934 Cardinal Pacelli (future Pope Pius XII) prayed at the feet of the Virgen del Pino. Now, Pope Leo XIV will be alongside the Virgen del Pino and the Cristo de Telde on June 11.
Preparations for the private transfer of both images to the Estadio de Gran Canaria are being finalized. The Santo Cristo will be transported in a specialized case, while the Virgen del Pino will travel in a military vehicle. On the night of the 10th, there will be vigils in both basilicas for the faithful to see the images.
After the mass on the 11th, the images will be transferred to Teror, presumably around midnight. This will be the first time the Cristo de Telde visits the Villa Mariana, where they will be placed on their thrones for a small procession. On Friday the 12th, a holiday in Teror for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the images will preside over the day in the Basilica.
On Sunday, June 14, at 7:00 PM, Bishop José Mazuelos will officiate a Mass of Thanksgiving outside the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino, thus concluding historic days for the island.
