The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, through the Municipal Institute for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Sport (IMD), has awarded for 468,097.06 euros the comprehensive renovation of the José Ruano Tejera football pitch, located in the Lomo Blanco neighborhood.

The company Equipur Canarias, S.L. will be responsible for executing the works, which will have a deadline of four months. The intervention will renovate the 5,985 square meters of the playing field, which will be equipped with new state-of-the-art artificial turf with organic infill. This action will replace the current surface, which shows advanced wear after years of use.
With this intervention, the José Ruano Tejera pitch will become the fourth in the city to incorporate organic infill, a more sustainable alternative to traditionally used materials. This measure anticipates the new requirements of the European regulation on microplastics, which will restrict the marketing of polymeric infill materials used in artificial turf fields from October 2031.
The Councilor for Sports and Youth, Carla Campoamor, highlighted that the project allows the city to adapt to European regulatory changes and continue improving the conditions for clubs, athletes, and citizens to practice sports. The project includes the complete removal of the existing turf for subsequent recycling or reuse, repair of surface deformations, and sub-base sanitation.
On the new base, a state-of-the-art artificial turf system with a prefabricated elastic and draining base will be installed, meeting the quality standards required by European regulations, the FIFA Quality program, and the ISCC PLUS sustainability certification. The new sports surface will incorporate organic infill, replacing traditional polymeric materials.
Furthermore, part of the removed turf will be reused in the vicinity of the field, promoting a circular economy. The pitch will maintain its current configuration, with markings for an 11-a-side football field and two transversal 8-a-side football fields. The project also includes the renovation of the ball-stop netting and the installation of new sports equipment, such as fixed and foldable goalposts, benches for teams, a referee bench, seating for the 8-a-side fields, a new electronic scoreboard, and corner flags.
