The initiative aims to provide teachers with a didactic tool to develop students' lexical competence, deepen knowledge of Canarian Spanish, and encourage its use. Over three thousand copies have been distributed in Primary Education classrooms of participating centers in the Viera Project and the PROA+ program.
Gonzalo Ortega explained that the project encourages students to research words and expressions used by their parents and grandparents within their family environment, thus promoting intergenerational dialogue. He warned that part of the Canarian vocabulary and phraseology is 'languishing' and highlighted the school's role in its recovery.
For his part, Poli Suárez emphasized the importance of schoolchildren knowing and feeling proud of words specific to the Canary Islands, linking learning to the bond between generations and to working on reading, writing, and research based on their immediate surroundings.
Through this initiative, the Canary Language Academy and the Ministry of Education reinforce their commitment to the conservation and dissemination of Canarian Spanish from the earliest educational stages.
